The detailed Index rerum et nominorum of the historical-critical edition of the Democracy published by Nolla extends over more than 60 pages and is likely to include more than 1000 entries, many of which refer only to terms or names that appear once. The great absentee in this index is “providence”, as if this term were an absolutely incidental term that in no way contributes to structuring the Tocquevillian œuvre. And this even though Tocqueville speaks of providence more than once, also in the Démocratie.
