Tocqueville’s understanding of religion and the church has often been the subject of academic debate (Allen 2005; Antoine 2003; Goldstein 1975; Hancock 1991; Mitchell 1999; Kahan 2015). Although Tocqueville’s main work contains only isolated sections on the churches in America or on Christianity in general, it nevertheless offers important points of reference for a positive definition of the role of religion in democracy. At the same time, he offered a completely new perspective on religious America. When James Madison presented the draft of the American Constitution, which declared the neutrality of the state in religious matters, the strict separation of church and state, as enshrined in the First Amendment of the Constitution of 1799, became a fundamental principle of the state.

Tocqueville’s understanding of religion and the church has often been the subject of academic debate (Allen 2005; Antoine 2003; Goldstein 1975; Hancock 1991; Mitchell 1999; Kahan 2015).
