Madame de Staël (1766–1817)
摘要
Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein was among the liberals whose approaches Tocqueville adopted and further developed from the perspective of an ongoing democratization of society. This is particularly evident in her posthumous historical work Considérations sur les principaux événements de la French Revolution, which, as Mellon (1958) notes, had a profound influence on the liberal view of history in the first half of the nineteenth century. Staël’s perspective on the French Revolution emphasized its role as a significant milestone in the long-term societal development. Rather than viewing it as a revolutionary upheaval or the definitive end of political tyranny and feudal society, as many contemporaries did, Staël understood it as an expression of a long-standing societal process with a centuries-long prehistory.
