The great French reformer François-Alexandre-Frédéric La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt was a role model for Tocqueville in many respects. Between 1794 and 1797, La Rochefoucauld travelled to the United States and Canada. He published his impressions of the economic life, political structures, and welfare institutions in North America in 1799 in the four-volume edition Voyage dans les Etats-Unis d’Amérique: fait en 1795–1796 et 1797, which, unlike the American literature at the beginning of the nineteenth century, provided a quite positive image of this egalitarian society.
