Tocqueville’s Work: Introduction
摘要
Tocqueville’s oeuvre is interdisciplinary in the truest sense of the word. In line with his legal training as a judge, his first work was on the prison system in North America, for which he traveled to North America with Gustave de Beaumont on behalf of the Ministry of Justice, the joint product of two legal scholars. As the title Du système pénitentiaire aux États-Unis et de son application en France (1833) anticipates, the two friends dedicated themselves to the question of to what extent the then progressive methods of imprisonment in the USA could be transferred to France.
