Literature and Cultural Studies
摘要
Alexis de Tocqueville wrote at a time when the differentiation of the sciences was just beginning and the boundaries between science and literature had not yet been fundamentally established. As a result, today (Diaz/Mélonio 2016; Guellec 2016), Tocqueville’s status in (French) literature and his relationship to it are under discussion. He himself, at least, described his work L’Ancien Régime et la Révolution as “political literature”. However, as Guellec (2016) points out, even if it remains legitimate to question the literariness of Tocqueville’s works (Mélonio/Diaz 2005), this statement can also be applied to the work De la démocratie en Amérique. Tocqueville’s concern with the importance of literature in democracy itself and the impact of democratization on it is another important aspect of cultural and literary studies. Furthermore, in recent years, he has increasingly been seen as a critic of racism, colonialism (see Chaps. 85 and 68 ) and social segmentation (Krause 2017). Contrary to contemporary discourses, which remain related to moral and philosophical aspects or use economic arguments, Tocqueville’s analysis dealt with the neglected problem of racist, sexist and xenophobic prejudices and the social exclusion of groups based on their skin colour, gender and origin within a democratic society. This aspect of his work remains relevant today (Atanassow 2015, 2022; Boyed 2022).
