This chapter introduces popular cohort theories that aim to explain differences between generations in work attitudes, values, and motivational factors. The generations commonly recognized in Germany—Baby Boomers, Generation X, Y, and Z—are presented along with the characteristics often attributed to them. It is emphasized that, despite overlaps in key aspects such as income, work-life balance, and autonomy, generational differences are also discussed. However, it is usually not clarified whether observed differences are truly generational or rather effects of life stage.

摘要

This chapter introduces popular cohort theories that aim to explain differences between generations in work attitudes, values, and motivational factors. The generations commonly recognized in Germany—Baby Boomers, Generation X, Y, and Z—are presented along with the characteristics often attributed to them. It is emphasized that, despite overlaps in key aspects such as income, work-life balance, and autonomy, generational differences are also discussed. However, it is usually not clarified whether observed differences are truly generational or rather effects of life stage.
