In 1654, Pierre de Fermat corresponded with Blaise Pascal about the correct solution to the Problème des partis, the so-called problem of points. While Fermat found a solution through combinatorial reasoning, Pascal developed a brilliant recursive method and, in the next step, discovered an approach using the arithmetic triangle that now bears his name.
