Severe injuries or illnesses often result in emergency medical care. The older the patient, the more frequently additional chronic comorbidities must be investigated. Early identification of all comorbidities plays an essential role in the success of therapeutic interventions. In recent years, standardized examination methods have been introduced that ensure a significant improvement in outcomes, such as trauma room management according to the ATLS® protocol. After diagnosis, a rapid decision is made as to whether an operative emergency exists or whether the patient can be transferred to the intensive care unit. Patients with minor or moderate injuries or illnesses undergo immediate triage. Geriatric patients must receive special consideration in this process. The assessment of cognitive impairments is mandatory for these patients. The goal of the DGU and DGG is to establish interdisciplinary, interprofessional units throughout Germany by 2025 that combine the strengths of all team members.
