Lifting Line Theory
摘要
While Joukowski’s theory calculates the lift for airfoil profiles or infinitely long wings, Prandtl’s lifting line theory can be used to determine the lift for three-dimensional wings of finite extent. In the previous chapter, we recognised the importance of vorticity generation. Prandtl’s basic idea consists in introducing the so-called horseshoe vortex, i.e., a horseshoe-shaped vortex field behind the wing, which assigns a vortex thread to each profile cross-section. The formulation and solution of the fundamental equation allows the calculation of the vortex strengths.
