Anxieties and Anxiety as a Social Phenomenon
摘要
Human coexistence is one of the main sources of anxiety in general. People are not only friends to one another, but also enemies. Social anxieties arise because individuals are dependent on others, as their lives and survival are only possible within communities. At the same time, social anxieties serve as an important regulatory mechanism for social behavior and for adherence to norms and rules. These anxieties can develop into collective fears, permeating entire communities or states, and, especially in times of crisis, can escalate into mass panic and social hysteria. This chapter examines various forms of social anxieties and incorporates relevant theories, particularly from sociology. It also addresses perspectives that characterize contemporary societies as societies of anxiety. Historical retrospectives provide examples of social anxieties experienced by people in the past.
