So-called medicofunctional music (music with intended therapeutic effects in medical settings) is used on a global scale for improving the psychophysic state of patients in emotionally aversive situations and situations marked by pain. While earlier studies emphasized therapeutic effects, it has been shown meanwhile that improvements can also be identified concerning cost containment, including parameters such as medication needed for analgesia and premedication to anesthesia, duration of in-patient treatment period after surgery, duration of NICU treatment for premature newborns, as well as efficacy and productivity of working staff. There are standards and definitions established for using medicofunctional music (recently also called “music-based interventions “to describe the fast growing number of applications of such concepts). Conducting research in the field, the standards established in medical science are adapted considering specific needs, such as use of mixed-methods research concepts combining quantitative and qualitative parameters as well. A growing number of physicians, hospitals and other medical institutions enclose medicofunctional music and/or music-based interventions such as so-called anxioalgolytic (anxiety, pain, and stress relieving) music in their daily practice of patient care.

摘要
