The Singing Voice and Health
摘要
The human voice is one of the features that marks out every single person from the proverbial “first scream” to the “last word.” It is virtually indivisible from the functions of breathing, cognition and emotion. It is considered one of the most important means of expression and communication of man, in that it vitally contributes to humans’ ability to speak. In a fundamental way, speech draws upon elements that are also of key importance in music. In his essay of 1872 titled “The expression of the emotions in man and animals,” Charles Darwin (1809–1882) already presumed “that the progenitors of man probably uttered musical tones before they had acquired the power of articulate speech” (Darwin CR, The expression of the emotions in man and animals. John Murray, London, 1872). Singing and speech are in any case linked in that every vocally musical and linguistic expression has a pitch, a volume and—provided it is more than just a single utterance—a rhythm.
