French writer Jules Verne is a key figure in the modern media landscape, who integrated, reworked and gave a mythical dimension to many aspects of the social imagination of his time, including the new developments in the human-animal relationship unfolding as a result of the Industrial Revolution. Focusing on the novel Deux Ans de Vacances, which was published in 1888 in famous children’s periodical Magasin d’Éducation et de Récréation, this article analyses the ideological underpinnings of the representation of violence against animals in Verne’s adaptation of the Robinsonade for young audiences. It shows how the imaginary space of the island, which functions both as a playground and a place of learning, unfolds a didactic fiction of naturalisation and moral legitimation of modern urban lifestyles and food practices.
