Recording and Analyzing Data

The previous chapters explain the basics of particle interactions and the types of detectors that make up particle physics experiments. However, physical results do not simply emerge from the experiment on their own: detectors generate electronic signals that must be recorded, filtered, collected, and interpreted. These steps are collectively referred to as data acquisition, reconstruction and analysis. This chapter illuminates the path from recording individual interactions, over the treatment of statistical uncertainties, to the interpretation of the results in light of known or new hypothetical physical theories. Along the way, we discuss how events are selected to be stored, how the interesting events and particles for a specific measurement are chosen, and how elementary measured quantities of the individual recorded particles are determined.
