Accelerators and Detectors
摘要
Particle accelerators are one of the main tools of particle physics. They accelerate particles to a certain energy. With increasing energy particle collisions on the one hand can resolve ever finer structures and, on the other hand, can also produce yet undiscovered heavier particles. However, merely accelerating particles to high energies does not in itself yield any new knowledge. Therefore, detectors that measure the properties of particles after a reaction took place play an equally important role. This chapter covers the way accelerators work and how detectors are developed by combining various experimental techniques that can jointly determine all important properties of the particles. Accelerators and detectors have also found their way into our daily lives, especially in medicine.
