Making the Rules of the Game
摘要
There must be rules. And let’s face it: Without rules, there is chaos. It is exciting to see how various biochemical processes “interpret” these rules to their limits, apparently gaming the system. In tax law one might probably speak of “abuse of design”, of “stretching the law”. It is almost a philosophical question, how Earth would be, if some of these rules were different. Nowadays, we can test such scenarios in computer simulations. But those “new” conditions could turn out to exist in the real world, maybe on another planet or within a highly specialized bacterium from a very exotic place—be it somewhere with lots of salt, most corrosive and alkaline soda or in the deepest depths of the World’s oceans.
