On February 15, 1763, Prussia, Austria and Saxony sign the Treaty of Hubertusburg. According to its title page, Lessing’s Minna von Barnhelm, or the Soldier’s Fortune (Minna von Barnhelm, oder das Soldatenglück) was composed in this year. That is fiction and part of the game. After Philotas, the comedy about Major von Tellheim, who is in Prussian service, and his Saxon fiancée Minna von Barnhelm is Lessing’s second reflection on the Seven Years’ War and its consequences. While Philotas, parabolically condensed, is set in an indeterminate Greek past, the curtain in Minna rises to reveal an inn in Berlin, where six months after the peace treaty (on August 22, 1763), Fräulein von Barnhelm arrives in search of her missing lover.
