Walking is a major goal for most patients. Effective walking requires not only forward progression but also the ability to change direction, to walk backward and sideways. The capacity to go up and down curbs, climb stairs and hills, and perform tasks such as opening and closing doors increases the utility of the activity. For full functional independence, the individual should be able to get down onto the ground and back up to standing again.
