Handcrafted Christmas figures play a key role in Otfried Preußler’s œuvre. They connect not only the work and the author, but also texts and images from different creative phases, with the crib or nativity scene also having a poetological function. This article shows that nativity scenes and other Christmas figures in Preußler’s work also function as coded objects of memory. As such, they are of great importance to Sudeten Germans in terms of their culture of remembrance: They store memories of the First Homeland and the expulsion from it. Two radio plays are used as examples to demonstrate how Otfried Preußler’s texts repeatedly refer back in particular to this aspect of the author’s biography. This reference often happens in the subtext and with the help of the very Christmas figures that are associated with nostalgia, crafts, the idea of home, and folk art.
