This article discusses Otfried Preußler’s poetics and his self-representation as an author for children and young adults. The article highlights the theory of authorship as a research perspective that allows us to describe the specifics of the field of children’s literature. Authors of children’s and young adult literature and their texts are perceived as being situated between art and pedagogy. In many of the texts in Ich bin ein Geschichtenerzähler (I Am a Storyteller), Preußler explains his ideas about this question of children’s literature as situated between art and pedagogical principles.
