This chapter takes the relational understanding of engaged literature developed in Chaps.  4 and 5 to the African American writer and novelist Jesmyn Ward. Centering in her novel Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017), it shows how this novel as part of a relational and densely networked poetics (and aesthetics) of breathing while Black that connects this award-winning novel with numerous works of non-fictional and autobiographical writing by Ward herself and by other Black writers, including Richard Wright, James Baldwin and Toni Morrison.
