The self may be an illusion in itself, but we need it as a concept of our specific uniqueness. Self-deception is a necessary protective mechanism for survival. Various sciences assume that humans develop a representation model of their own person in the brain, a holistic construct that enables a consistency of experience. However, as soon as this is to be replicated in an AI, it becomes clear that it cannot be that simple. There is no central pacemaker in the isolated brain. An artificial double does not automatically lead to a conscious experience of the self. Humans are not autists, and self-awareness only exists in confrontation with that of others.
