Around the middle of the 18th century, yet another academic discipline was developed: the philosophy of history. The new term “philosophie de l’histoire,” which originated with Voltaire, was associated with the aim of systematically investigating and presenting history. Whereas philosophical reflections had previously been scattered throughout historiographical works, for the first time, texts offering an overview of history as a whole or addressing general topics were also published.
