Practicing surgery on models has become significantly more important in recent years. It is increasingly unjustifiable for the initial learning curve to be completed on patients; instead, whenever possible, the learning curve should occur away from patient care, allowing training to focus on gaining expertise before working with patients. Advances in statistics and medical education research have made the use of models for continuing education more objective. This chapter presents various types of surgical models for robotic platforms, including plastic models, biological models, in vivo models, and the perfused cadaver model. Together, these resources optimize the learning curve, facilitate the application of competency assessment tools and Entrustable Professional Activities, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
