This text examines architectural treatises translated into English between 1600 and 1750 in order to demonstrate that Great Britain functioned as a relay station, increasing the spread of continental European architectural models and enabling their transmission as far as America and India, and thus opened new ‘spaces of translation’. These image and text-based, intra- and intermedial translation processes are discussed with reference to a total of forty-nine treatises. The political significance of these publications is the main focus of the paper. At the beginning of the period under investigation, the aim was to redefine the national space of Great Britain (e.g. as a ‘new Rome’) by importing continental European models. Later, by exporting such models to the colonies, new, local architectural traditions were established that illustrated the dominance of the colonial power.

摘要
