The paper deals with the French translations of the travel accounts about Italy written by Johann Jacob Ferber, Patrick Brydone and William Hamilton, published in the 1770s and 1780s. Despite the different personalities of their authors, these works shared a keen interest in the natural history of the Italian peninsula, particularly its mineralogy, reflecting a more general curiosity among European travelers (and readers) from the mid-eighteenth century onwards about this new aspect of the traditional Grand Tour to Italy. Through a historical contextualization of these translations as well as an analysis of the translators’ paratexts (especially their footnotes), the paper seeks to explore the functions of these translations in their target culture and the readership to which they were addressed. In doing so, it offers a contribution to the study of the role of translations in the complex history of the representation of Italy in the early modern period.
