The debate about political correctness was one of the most important issues in Trump’s 2016 election campaign and still shapes many political debates and decisions today. The change in meanings associated with this phrase is striking. In the debate about ways of speaking in particular, various affects and accusations collide. Starting with some specific observations on Trump’s 2016 election campaign, an understanding of these practices is sought, and their psychodynamic dimension is demonstrated using insights from linguistic theory based on Émile Benveniste. The explanations lead to the thesis that an obscene semantics, as practised by Trump, not only undermines the reference to the object, but also attacks the possibilities of truth as a process of mentalizing communication.
