In recent decades, there has been a significant decline in fatal lightning accidents in industrialized countries. The rarity of lethal lightning accidents, the possibility of events with discrete characteristic findings, lack of knowledge, and insufficient care by the examining physician all contribute to the misidentification of the correct cause of death.
