The weather phenomena of thunderstorms with lightning and thunder have always filled humanity with fear and dread. In ancient Greece, lightning was considered an expression of the wrath of the god Zeus. In contrast, among the ancient Germans, there was also the widespread belief that thunderstorms were associated with the restoration of justice and peace. The extraordinarily powerful god Donar was believed to have protected people from attacks by hostile monsters by striking them down with a stone throwing axe, which he hurled away with a lightning bolt. Furthermore, numerous peoples revered the ground struck by lightning and subsequently considered it sacred.
