Standardization for a Steer-by-Wire vehicle

The future technology Steer-by-Wire enables a variety of additional features in vehicle use. The spectrum ranges from extended driving dynamics functions, autonomous driving to new interior concepts. However, there has been uncertainty in the industry as to what requirements are necessary for a safe implementation of this new technology. Both sets of current standards, the DIN 70065 and ECE-R79 cover explicitly and implicitly performance requirements for normal operation and requirements in case of a fault. These requirements focus on the SbW system, but also supporting systems in the vehicle like power supply or brake systems are affected. Additionally, the ISO26262 provides a generic approach to reduce risks to a reasonable level. This technical paper investigates how the present standards cover for the demand to develop safe Steer-by-Wire and supporting system designs, identifies potential gaps, and proposes the potential need of advancing those standards further. Aligning the industry to a common requirement landscape for SbW will ensure that the required steering performance and potential vehicle limitations are uniformly managed and implemented so that vehicle behavior is consistent to the customer.
