The Rolling Shutter Model Train: A First Glimpse

The Rolling Shutter Effect is well known in the photography for distorting moving objects in images. This paper explores the usage of the rolling shutter effect to measure the speed of a H0 model train (scale 1:87). For this purpose, we implemented a first prototype of the Rolling Shutter Model Train (RSMT), which utilizes the rolling shutter effect to calculate its own speed with only a single image. The system consists of a micro controller and a camera. The camera faces downwards and takes images of the rails and the cross ties. Depending on the speed of the train and the time delay of the line acquisition of the camera, the cross ties are projected with a skew in the image. The micro controller detects the skewness of the cross ties within a single image by finding the minimal quadratic shift between two lines. At this highly prototypical state, the train achieves an average deviation of \(9.7\%\) .
