The archive of the Leipzig Mission possesses 91 coloured slides from East Africa that were used and lent out for lectures before the Second World War. They derive from black and white photographs taken by missionaries or their wives around 1910 on Kilimanjaro and in the late 1920s in the Pare Mountains. The photographs may be sorted into eight categories: ethnographic, flora and fauna, medicine, individual persons, groups of people, journeys, landscapes, missionary work. As sources their value is limited by three factors: they are mostly secondary (since the colouring was not based on knowledge of Africa); there is hardly any accompanying documentation; and by transforming rectangular photographs into square slides some information was lost. Nevertheless, the slides are aesthetically attractive and offer an insight into how Africa was perceived in Germany a century ago.
