The Changing Vision of the Berliner Missionsgesellschaft as Portrayed in the Masthead of Its Illustrated Periodical Der Missionsfreund, 1896–1939
摘要
Over the past decade, an increasing number of researchers started to value the missionary periodical not only as a source of information on certain topics or areas, but also as a genre of missionary propaganda: used to keep home audiences informed of the work abroad and encourage them to offer financial support. Missionary societies paid as much attention to the visual appearance of their periodicals as they could afford, beginning with the design of the cover page and the masthead. With a picturesque masthead and a minimum number of words, the vision of the mission could be conveyed in a vivid and instantly recognisable way. Over time, as missionised communities became increasingly independent of missionising entities, the vision of the missionary society had to be adjusted and, accordingly, the mastheads of the periodicals also had to change. This chapter discusses the Berliner Missionsgesellschaft’s illustrated periodical Der Missionsfreund from 1896 to 1939.
