On a gloomy and cold Thursday morning in November at the beginning of the millennium, a heavy transport truck loaded with reinforced concrete beams and measuring 35 m / 114 feet in length blocked an unguarded railway crossing outside a small town in Westphalia, Germany due to a technical defect. A “Talent” type diesel railcar, used by many commuters and students, collided in the dark with the tons of reinforced concrete beams and pushed them about 9 m / 29 feet further until the train came to a halt with a completely destroyed driver’s cab. Prompted by the report “Train collision with truck”, the responsible emergency control center for fire and disaster protection as well as for the emergency medical  service (EMS) triggered a “Mass casualty incident” alarm, which is reached with 5 or more injured.
