On a late summer afternoon, our helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) is called to a severe motor vehicle accident in a rural mid-mountain region. On approach, it is evident that one person is still in the vehicle, the fire department has already removed the roof of the completely destroyed car, and the vehicle has been secured against a fall using a winch. Furthermore, two ambulances, a physician-staffed ground EMS unit, and the police are on site.
