The human heart is about 7 cm in width and 12–15 cm in length. On average, it weighs 230 grams to 340 grams, which is about 0.5% of the body weight. The heart should not weigh more than 500 grams because of the risk of insufficient blood supply to the coronary vessels, which do not grow accordingly to the heart. 500 grams are therefore considered the “critical limit”. However, since it would take much effort to determine the weight of a patient’s heart on the patient, we need to know the size and shape of the healthy heart for imaging, in order to compare them to the size and shape of the sick heart.
