Chapter 3 deals with the biophysical and technical principles of the patch clamp technique, as far as they are relevant for the experimental procedure and the understanding of the measurement results. A few simple principles are sufficient to understand the functions of the amplifier to the extent that measurements can be carried out correctly, results understood and problems recognized. To avoid problems in the application, special attention is given to possible sources of error and their avoidance or compensation.
