This chapter is dedicated to sustainable consumption. It begins by explaining the ecological and social impacts of consumption and why sustainable consumption is a central component of sustainable development. This is followed by a discussion of the concept of sustainable consumption and related concepts. The chapter then focuses on six psychological factors that influence sustainable consumption. These are 1) cost-benefit considerations, 2) knowledge and information, 3) habits and routines, 4) identity, status and social norms, 5) moral motives and values, and to a much lesser extent, 6) sociodemographic characteristics. The chapter concludes with two critical perspectives on sustainable consumption and the existing research on it: the risk of overestimating the influence of individual sustainable consumption at the expense of other influences, and the tendency to neglect social aspects when considering sustainable consumption.
