Alternative Formats
摘要
While the traditional competitive format for children’s soccer is still the foundation for youth development programs, the DFB’s motto “fun in the game—laying the foundation for grassroots and elite soccer for youth,” struggles to garner support. The DFB needs to stoke interest and enthusiasm in children to want to play. Child-friendly game formats helps make soccer accessible and fun for all children, regardless of ability or skill. In the traditional 7 vs. 7 format, coaches often say: “You are the defender, your job is to stay back and defend our goal. Do not cross the halfway line no matter what!” Is this aggressive and limited approach a good basis for helping kids learn to play and love soccer? In the new competition formats, such as 3 vs. 3, everyone is an attacker and defender, simultaneously. Ideally, in a 60-min 3 vs. 3 tournament, every kid is able to score at least one goal, shoot at the goal, providedan assist, block a goal, etc. If the kid is limited to a single position, then their capabilities, development, and interests as an athlete are equally limited.
