This article examines the representation of work in the texts A Woman’s Story (1987) by Annie Ernaux and A Woman’s Battles and Transformations (2021) by Édouard Louis. The analysis focuses on the narrators’ mothers, who grew up in a working-class environment and whose identities are characterized by the performance of hard physical work. The working-class milieu is portrayed in a very negative way in these texts and the characters display shame regarding their origin. Women are objectified in this milieu and rarely appear as subjects with agency. Conflicts between mothers and their children arise in both books when the children succeed in gaining an education. The consequence of this is an alienation between the mothers and children.
