In the preceding chapters, trends and developments were explained that justify a complete transformation of the automotive industry. New market conditions, the transition to electric drive, and opportunities associated with digitalization motivate new competitors from other industries to aggressively enter the automotive market. To meet the emerging challenges, it is vital for established automotive companies to address the necessary changes with a comprehensive digitalization strategy using innovative technologies based on a comprehensive integrated roadmap. To develop this, an analysis of future market expectations serves as a starting point, from which a vision is derived describing how this industry must change in key areas. Electric cars, autonomous driving in flexible mobility offers, and connected services in complete synchronization between vehicles and smartphones are discussed, as well as a completely changed customer experience in sales and service and the efficiency increase of business processes through automation, for example in development, production, and administration. From the analysis of these development needs, the goals of the transformation strategy emerge, which are then subdivided into areas of action. In these areas, key projects are identified in the following Chap. 6 and positioned on a roadmap, which will then be picked up in the subsequent chapter with implementation examples.
