The piezoelectric effect, first discovered by the brothers Pierre and Jacques Curie, relates electrical quantities to mechanical quantities and vice versa. When piezoelectric (monocrystalline) materials (e.g. quartz, tourmaline) are subjected to electrical signals along certain crystal orientations, deformation occurs along well-defined crystal directions.
