Ports are the method of choice for establishing long-term central venous access. There is a wide variety of different ports available. They differ in terms of materials, design, price, and quality. This chapter provides an overview of the technical characteristics of ports and their impact on performance. To facilitate understanding of their development, the history of port systems is also presented. The aim is to enable port selection based on quality criteria and to highlight that, in addition to price, there are other important factors to consider when choosing a port.
