There are a myriad of different ways to design a caterpillar’s head: you find black head capsules, yellow ones and heads that align to the colour of the body and cannot even be identified as heads at all. Then there are also huge eyespots (false eyes) to deter predators, which interestingly are situated on the caterpillar’s back, not on the actual head. And finally, there are also caterpillars that have true eyes and thus a ‘facial expression’. To me, it makes a huge difference whether I can see these eyes (be they false or true ones) or whether it’s just a plain head capsule.
