The basic principle of electroplating is the electrolysis-induced layer deposition on the cathodically polarized workpiece. After general explanations of the underlying electrochemical reaction mechanisms, the focus of this chapter is on electroplating techniques for the manufacture of grinding and dressing tools and wires for EDM. When coating profiled grinding wheels, the formation of the electric field and the length of the streamlines must be considered. The field lines are concentrated at tips and edges, resulting in increased material layer thicknesses. This effect can be counteracted by adjusting the design of the anode geometry of the tool electrode or by using additives in the electrolyte to increase the throwing power. In principle, the expected layer thicknesses can be calculated using Faraday's laws. After the production of grinding wheels and dressing rollers with electroplated bonds, the focus is on discussions of the coating properties, in particular hardness, residual stress and the wetting and bonding of the super abrasives. The electroplating of EDM wires is carried out in specific continuous processes.

摘要
