On the way back from my wife’s book club, her acquaintance approaches me, saying she has heard about my idea for a manuscript—a non-fiction book specifically for laypeople, aha!—and inquires about the topic and whether I already have a title in mind. My willing response, that it should broadly be about the Earth’s magnetic field over the last 500 million years and generally about the magnetization of rocks, is met with a “You’ll come up with something with an actual geoscientific background”. After all, I am some kind of geologist.
