Expanding global trade networks and Christian missionary activities in the Early Modern period initiated interactions between Japan and Europe. These interactions were shaped by translation—in its broadest sense. This introductory chapter provides a literature review, outlining the history of research on missionary encounters, and the history of translation cultures in the Early Modern period. It further summarizes and characterizes the interdisciplinary contributions to the volume, and points out some of the new findings of this volume’s authors.
