Regulation of brake particle emissions by Euro 7 - requirements and trends in future chassis development

Traffic-related emissions are strongly criticized by the public because they contribute to climate change and are classified as hazardous to health. Exhaust emissions have been regulated for almost three decades. As there is still no legal limit for brake and tire wear, the percentage of non-exhaust emissions has risen continuously. Some of the particles can be assigned to the size class of PM10 (≤10μm), which are hazardous to human health. According to the proposal for Euro 7 legislation, also a regulation of brakes particulate emissions is expected. The proposal includes a limit value (until 31.12.2034) of 7mg/km per vehicle (M1, N1). From 01.01.2035 the limit will be reduced to 3mg/km. Due to these new requirements; brake systems will have to be homologated with regard to emissions. This means that additional development work will be required for chassis and complete vehicles. The aim of the article is to describe the complex requirements for current and future chassis development considering future emissions legislation. This includes emissions testing according to the requirements of the future UN GTR. Another focus is on the development of innovative technologies for emission reduction. These include new types of brake systems such as disc coating variants and material modifications. CFD-simulation studies are presented, which can make a significant contribution to the development of new sampling and reduction systems. Finally, a methodical approach for emission data acquisition and application is described. Emission estimation models can enable the assessment of environmental pollution in multivalent traffic scenarios. Statistical methods can be used to identify correlations between tribological properties, friction materials, operating and environmental conditions.
