The European-funded project “Low particle Emissions and lOw Noise Tyres” (LEON-T) is a lighthouse project for Europe in terms of emissions from transportation. One crucial work item deals with particle emissions from tyres. For the purpose of their characterization on roads, a heavy duty vehicle was prepared for testing. The vehicle used is equipped with a GPS-based logging device to determine vehicle dynamics. The core of the measurement layout features a particle sampling system for different axles in combination with the incorporation of particle emission measurement devices. The latter allow to determine particle number and mass concentration plus particle size distribution. The investigation allows to give an overview of the strain collectives and emission characteristics of different driving cycles (public roads and proving ground). Finally, relevant outcomes will be summarised and an outlook will introduce the next steps within LEON-T project.
